Savannah's emergency management director terminated
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - On Thursday, Ben Johnson resigned his position as Savannah's emergency management director.
The announcement was made during a special meeting Friday afternoon, which was called after a newspaper report earlier in the week detailed discrepancies and inaccuracies regarding the qualifications of Johnson.
City Council members just wrapped up a two and a half hour meeting at about 5 p.m. Friday. Issues were raised about vendors not being paid on time. The City Council said they have now been paid and a vendor was listed on a request for proposal as being blacklisted from doing business with the city. They said this has also since been corrected.
Council members had previously expressed concern over the hiring process and the details of Johnson's resume being wrong.
Council members are also concerned that City Manager Rochelle Small-Toney did not react quickly enough in her decision making.
Small-Toney will lead the search for an immediately replacement.
Purchasing department issues were also addressed during the meeting. 106 vendors were not paid on time due to a system error. All of the vendors have now been paid.
