CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - A semi fire occurred Wednesday morning on Interstate 95. The cab of the tractor-trailer nearly burned to the ground.

It happened at mile marker 108 near the Jimmy Deloach Parkway near Port Wentworth. Traffic is moving slowly on I-5 northbound.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police, Georgia State Patrol and Pooler Police responded as firefighters work to unload the trailer to assure all flames are out. Investigators said mechanical issues likely caused the fire.

The driver was able to get out of the vehicle safely.

The semi itself was destroyed and leaked diesel fuel onto the interstate. The truck was carrying purses, some of which caught fire because of how hot the flames got.
