SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Wedding season is in full swing, and if you plan on  getting hitched anytime soon you probably know how quickly the costs add up.

According to a recent survey from, the average wedding costs approximately $28,400. From the reception to the ring, there's plenty of ways to save money and still have the wedding of your dreams.

The first piece of advice wedding planners suggest is to make sure you pay for your wedding in cash. If you put all of your expenses on a credit card, your interest could end up doubling before you pay it all off.

WTOC spoke with wedding planners Tara Skinner and Ashley Greene, owners of Posh Petals and Pearls. They said most vendors prefer cash or check, and some don't even accept credit card. Vendors prefer to have a steady cash flow, so they're usually more willing to work with couples willing to pay that way.

Skinner also said one of the easiest ways to save on your wedding is to cut back on the guest list, and to do so, consider having a destination wedding.

"Destination weddings are fabulous in that aspect because you're not going to have as many people that are able to do a plane ride away or travel that far. So, destination weddings are a great way to save on money."

Some other suggestions? Try a casual wedding at an outdoor venue. Skinner said you'll end up spending less money on decorations. Also, instead of an open bar, serve wine, beer and a signature cocktail. Lastly, consider decorating your cake with real flowers as opposed to sugar ones which can be pricey.
