BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) - Beaufort County officials said the number of murders and attempted murders dropped in 2013, compared to 2012 statistics.
It's a different story for Hampton County, which had an increase.
Hampton County had two murders in 2013 versus zero in 2012
The latest one happened right before Christmas, and is still unsolved.
In Beaufort County, there were 26 attempted murders and two murders in 2013, versus 9 murders in 2012.
Robin Mcintosh, the spokesperson for Beaufort Sheriff's office says communication between law enforcement and residents is the key to keeping crime down in the county, which is why the Sheriff's Office is making some major changes in 2014.
Starting in February, the Sheriff's Office will be on all of the major social media sites, and residents will have the ability to send and receive tips via email and text messaging .
"I think once we start employing that we're going to see results immediately. We're going to see people getting this information about things that are happening in their area and calling us and saying we saw this and we want to know what we can do to help," said McIntosh. "Crime preventions is something that anybody can do, and we want to encourage people."
We contacted law enforcement officials in Jasper County as well, but haven't gotten a response from the sheriff's office yet, and Ridgeland Police Department wasn't able to get us their numbers Monday.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office will be releasing the complete 2013 crime report sometime in the next month.
