Cause of 38th St house fire under investigation

Fire officials are investigating a house fire that broke out on East 38th Street in Savannah around 8:30 a.m. Friday.

When firefighters were on their way to the scene, they say they could already see smoke from blocks away.

"They could see the smoke, it just kind of blanked the neighborhood on East 38th Street," said Mark Keller, Savannah Fire.

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - "Huge, huge flames -- huge flames like I've never seen before," said Beverly Santos, lives next door.

Fire crews were able to get the fire under control rather quickly.

"There were heavy flames; they attacked it defensively initially just to knock down the flames as best they could," said Keller.

But by that time, the damage was done.

"Just kind of all the way through that structure, that's where the damage is, it's pretty extensive," Keller explained.

The fire started on the front porch and quickly spread to the rest of the home.

Family members did not want to go on camera, but they said the house has been in their family for over 30 years, and the woman who lived there passes away, and now her grandson stays at the house from time to time.

He had just left the house for work hours before the fire started.

Firefighters were able to put the blaze out, but it caused extensive damage to the home. Relatives said they are sad to see it go, along with the family heirlooms that were inside.

"Losing that house, and having something happening to it, it is hurtful to me," says Santos.

The Santos' said the flames were so large that they were worried about their own home for a while.

"And then my grandson got upset because he thought we were in danger and he kept saying 'I don't want to die, I don't want to die'," she said.

Fire crews don't believe anyone was in the home when the fire started. Neighbors say it's a loss to the whole community.

Santos says, "Now every time I look over there all I'm going to see is the danger that happened in that house, the danger and you know, it's really sad."

Luckily, no injuries were reported.

The cause is currently under investigation.
