HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - The Spirit of '45 Tour stopped on Hilton Head Island on Wednesday.

The Spirit of '45 Tour is a group of men and women dedicated to keeping the spirit of 1945 alive, traveling the country and encouraging communities to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of  World War II next year.

This event hosted the Hilton Head Big Band Jazz Bank, a speech from the mayor of Hilton Head, Drew Laughlin and a parade throughout the Cypresses' large campus filled with and honoring veterans.

"I'm doing this to honor my dad, but I'm also doing this to honor all the World War II veterans that died to make this country as it is today," said Auston O'Neill, national bugler of The Spirit of '45. "And we wouldn't have the freedoms that we have if those man and woman hadn't served and died."

The Cypress Community on Hilton head island was also officially recognized as the first purple heart community in the country.
