Rape Crisis Center hosts self defense class for college students

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Rape Crisis center is teaching girls how to protect themselves from harm before they head off to college this fall semester.

The two hour self defense course called "Safe at College" aims to build self confidence, awareness, and personal safety skills establishing a level of comfort for mothers who are sending their daughters off to college.

College age girls are the number one target for rape, and organizers say they wanted to make sure these young women learn all they can about protecting themselves. Especially as they leave their familiar environment.

The class is taught by Todd Mashburn, a certified and experienced Krav Maga Instructor who believes the self defense training is a life-long gift for young women concerned about their personal safety.

"What we want to do is provide them with enough information and education whereby they go on their college campuses more aware of their surroundings," said Kesha Gibson-Carter, executive director of the Savannah Rape Crisis Center. "Understanding the value of traveling in pairs, not leaving their friend alone, watching what they drink, when they drink and how much they drink."

The event started at 3:00 p.m., many mothers and daughters decided to do it together knowing they would both benefit from the class.
