SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - One local farmer is in the running to win $5,000.

Bon Apetit held their national Fork-to-Farm Grant Competition on Tuesday at Savannah College of Art and Design. The program is to help small food businesses grow.

Ben Deen, with Savannah River Farms based out of Sylvania, said supporting local is so important for so many reasons.

"To get wholesome foods back into the markets instead of having to bring other foods in from other countries and other states," said Deen. "Let's do it on a local basis and save money on transportation."

Deen said if they win, they'll use the money to build fencing on another 20 acres of farmland.
