One lane of eastbound I-16 was shut down and traffic was moving slowly in the area for hours as officials with the Georgia State Patrol, Emanuel County Sheriff's Office, Swainsboro Fire Department, and EMS conducted their preliminary investigation.

According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Powell, the accident occurred between a white SUV and a truck, after the SUV drove from the westbound lane into the median, and then entered the opposite lane causing a head-on collision.

The driver, Golden, was pronounced dead at the scene. Golden's son, Xavier, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. He has since stepped down from the trauma unit and into a regular room, and is expected to be able to go home Wednesday or Thursday.
