BRYAN CO., GA (WTOC) - Interstate 16 westbound is back open in Effingham County, after two tractor trailers and another vehicle were involved in a wreck Wednesday night.
The wreck happened around 11:30 p.m. at exit 143/U.S. Highway 280, at the Bryan/Effingham County line.
According to the Georgia State Patrol office in Rincon, two commercial tractor trailers were involved in the wreck. The first semi was in the emergency lane gaining speed and trying to merge back onto the highway when the driver cut in front of an on-coming semi in the right-hand lane.
The second semi hit the back of the semi merging, causing the truck to jack-knife, which closed all lanes. The cab of the second semi also caught fire.
Kevin Alford, 41, was killed in the accident. He was not at fault in the wreck.
SCRT is handling the investigation in regards of any potential charges that the driver of the first semi could be facing. Due to the investigation, GSP could not release the driver's identification.
