Hundreds participate in the 'Get Your Rear in Gear' 5k race to support colon cancer prevention

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - More than 1,000 people gathered in a united effort against colon cancer during the "Get Your Rear in Gear" 5K race.

Each year the race is held to raise awareness about colon cancer prevention. This year's race honored the memory of our friend and long time WTOC anchor Mike Manhatton who passed one year ago this week from the disease.

Everyone ran for Mike and continued to spread his message by encouraging folks to get screened for colon cancer and support prevention projects. Survivors were present to share their stories during the event and their bravery could be felt from miles away. Others were also there to remember their friends and loved ones who lost their battle to the disease.

All agreed that early detection is key.

"I can tell you that when Mike was originally screened back in 2008 it was a very scary experience for us," said Mike Manhatton's wife, Mariella Manhatton. He made it his personal mission whether it was through speaking engagements or the news to tell people to get those screenings done, they are critically important."

"It is potentially preventable, the way we prevent it is through colonoscopy, so if you are over the age of 50 and you haven't had a colonoscopy you need to get screened," urged Dr. Travis Wiggins.

All of the proceeds from the event will help support colon cancer prevention.
