Woman tries to escape vehicle involved in police chase that ends in crash; driver flees on foot

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - A woman is safe now after trying to flee a vehicle involved in a police chase overnight that ended in a crash, but the suspect is still on the loose.

It all started shortly after 2 a.m. According to Richmond Hill Police, one of their officers noticed a vehicle driving northbound on Hwy 17 and the driver was failing to maintain their lane. The officer suspected the driver may be under the influence so they hit their blue emergency lights and then noticed a women hanging out of the passenger-side window attempting to get out. The women was waving her hands as if she needed help.

Police pursued the car into Chatham County, where the car crashed and rolled several times before it came to a stop at the corner of Chevis and Wild Heron roads. The suspect then got out and ran into the woods.

Officials say they know who the suspect is. They say after conflicting reports from the woman, they found that she knew the man, and that they had a disagreement about where they were headed and she wanted out of the vehicle.

Police have issued warrants out for the man's arrest, and say he already had other warrants out for him as well.

Right now, the women is safe and was checked out on the scene by EMS.

The Richmond Hill Police Department has called in a detective to interview the women at this time. The man is still at large in the woods.
