SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - For Savannah, perhaps the most powerful platform a candidate for office can have, is to fight crime. That is exactly what life-long Savannah resident, Bill Durrence, is hoping will give him a seat on city council.

On Friday, Durrence announced his run for Alderman representing the second district. He and a small crowd gathered in Washington Square in late afternoon to make that announcement, and talk about the needs of the city and what he can bring to city council. He says the current council needs a lesson in public safety.

"The most important thing to a lot of people in the city, not just in the second district, is crime and public safety issues. I think we have to do a much better job of addressing public safety issues. I think Chief Lumpkin has some good ideas we definitely need to follow through on. I think the current council has been a little sluggish in their response to the things that he needs," said Bill Durrence, running for second district alderman.
