Investigation continues into fatal shooting at Coligny Beach access
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating a homicide at the Coligny Beach access on Hilton Head Island Sunday night.
The victim has been identified as 17-year-old Dominique Williams of Hilton Head Island. Williams was shot one time by a male subject, while walking with friends at approximately 8:20 pm. He died at the scene.
The suspect remains at large, but investigators believe they know who he is and are hoping to make an arrest. He is described as a juvenile African-American male with slender build, between 5'09" and 6' tall, wearing a black shirt and black pants.
Officials say the shooting is believed to be the result of a recent dispute between the victim and the juvenile suspect, and that this was an isolated incident.
"It is surprising because I never expected anything like that here," said Felicia Cielaszyk. "It just does not seem like a place for that kind of thing."
"It is very disturbing that this would happen, 8:20 at night," said BCSO Capt. Bob Bromage. "There were a bunch of families and children out there. Very dangerous, very reckless."
Investigators say they do believe they know who the suspect is and are hoping to make an arrest.
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Williams Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina.
The shooting remains under investigation.
