WAYNE CO., GA (WTOC) - The Wayne County Sheriff's Office has requested the GBI investigate a shooting involving several of their deputies Tuesday afternoon.

According to the GBI, the initial information provided to them is that Wayne County deputies responded to a domestic dispute call at 114 Briar Branch Road in Jesup after receiving a 911 call. Deputies made contact with the complainant down the street from the residence to determine the details of the dispute when they heard multiple gunshots. The deputies then went to the residence where they made contact with Jerrod Tyre, 35, who had a handgun. Tyre fired multiple shots into a wooded area near the residence.

The Wayne County Special Response Team (SRT) was then called to the scene to assist. Officials say deputies talked to Tyre and tried to get him to give them the gun, but he would not and then aggressively approached the deputies with the gun at which time one of the SRT members fired multiple shots striking Tyre.

Tyre was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputies were not injured during the incident.

The GBI says they will conduct an independent investigation to determine what exactly occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete it will be turned over to the district attorney.
