WAYNE CO., GA (WTOC) - Wayne County Sheriff's deputy Robert Brantley, 38, will remain on administrative leave after shooting a suspect on Tuesday night.

It happened after deputies got the complaint of a dispute and shots fired at a house on Briar Branch Road.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation tells WTOC the deputies found 35-year-old Jerrod Tyre dead outside of his home. Reports say Brantley fired four shots with three hitting Tyre.

The police tape is still visible on side of the home from when investigators spent three hours there until around daybreak, collecting evidence to figure out what happened in this shooting, and why.

"We're all just in shock. We don't know what could have caused this to be tragic," said LaWanda Ponville, relative.

Deputies contend that Tyre came toward them with a gun, and would not stop or put it down.

"They confronted the individual who was armed. Eventually, shots were fired and he was killed at the scene," said Wayne County Sheriff, John Carter. "The facts will speak for themselves. In this particular case, we have some evidence that will help us. Some of it is video evidence."

Relatives say Tyre had celebrated his birthday that afternoon with his father and target practice. They cannot imagine him starting anything with officers.

"He's just a humble child. He's not out there causing trouble for anybody; just an all-around good kid," Ponville said.

The GBI will turn over their complete report to the district attorney when it is finished, who will decide where this will go next.

Brantley has an extensive law enforcement background. He is currently assigned as a criminal investigator, but he spent nine years as a Military Policeman, two years with Jesup PD, and two years with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. He is also a member of SRT.
