LIBERTY CO., GA (WTOC) - The GBI is investigating after a 20-year-old soldier was shot in the head on Virginia Lane, around 11 p.m. on Saturday.

Officials say 25-year-old soldier, Peter Anthony Petri, is in custody at the Liberty County Jail. Petri is assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division.

Petri has been charged with reckless conduct and involuntary manslaughter.

The Army released a statement on Monday, saying Petri's alleged actions are not in line with the Army's values.

A cavalry scout, Petri entered active duty in February 2012 and deployed to Afghanistan the same year.

The victim died on the scene and his identity has not been released. According to GBI Special Agent in charge, Stacy Carson, the victim was a Fort Stewart soldier.

Military officials are cooperating with the GBI and Long County law enforcement in the investigation. They say their thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends affected.

Installation support services, including counselors and chaplains, have been provided to the unit.
