Ft. Stewart soldier shot and killed in Long County identified
FT. STEWART, GA (WTOC) - One Fort Stewart soldier is dead and another soldier is charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct after a shooting on Saturday in a Long County home.
Fort Stewart officials have identified the victim as Spc. Hunter Kelly, 20, 3rd Infantry Division. Kelly listed Sparks, Nevada as his home of record. A cavalry scout, he entered active duty in August 2013. Kelly's awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon. He had no deployments.
The soldier being charged is Spc. Peter Petri, 25, also assigned to the 3rd ID. A cavalry scout, Petri entered active duty in February 2012 and was assigned to the unit in November 2014. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2012.
Military officials are cooperating with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Long County law enforcement in the investigation.
The thoughts and prayers of the 3rd ID and Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield are with the families and friends affected by this incident. Installation support services, including counselors and chaplains, have been provided to the unit.
