Concern after shooting occurs in popular parking garage in downtown Savannah
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Nine people injured in five different shootings over the weekend and some folks are upset knowing in one of those cases four people were shot inside a popular parking garage, and one of those victims was an innocent bystander inside his car.
The shooting happened inside the Whitaker Street parking garage, but it doesn't seem to be stopping people from parking in it. The people said they're disappointed by the violence but they aren't going anywhere.
"Being a Savannhian, being a local boy, I'm not going anywhere. This is my home and enough is enough and I'm going to do more than complain, I'm going to do more than fret and ring my hands, I'm going to show up here every day, I'm going to do my part to make sure that this city stays safe," said Ruel Joyner, downtown business owner. "I think citizens and residents are coming together. You know i think from the marching, to the people really stepping out there and starting to mentor young people, starting to look in these neighborhoods and saying what can I do different to help this young person."
WTOC spoke with Gabriel Horton the day after the shooting and he says he was inconvenienced having to come back the next day and pay extra to pick up his car. He says he used to live in Savannah a few years ago, and it's shocking for him to know the violence hasn't changed.
"I know a lot has to do with gang related issues that I didn't even know existed in Savannah," said Horton. "I would like to see Savannah move into a brighter light."
Both guys say the shootings haven't shied them away from enjoying the downtown area, but they did say they're going to be more aware of their surroundings.
