YEMASSEE, SC (WTOC) - Multiple agencies are investigating after a body was found in an abandoned burned car on Jenks Lane in Yemassee.

Officers have been working for several hours after a body was found early Friday morning on Jenks Lane off of Highway 17.

"9:30 this morning, one of the officers received a report of a burnt vehicle with possibly a body inside. Once we arrived, we did find the car and a body. We called, SLED is on the scene and their arson unit. The body is unidentified and we don't know who the vehicle belongs to," said Yemassee Police Department Chief Gregory Alexander.

The property on Jenks Lane belongs to Yemassee councilman Jordan Jinks, who says he's been trying to sell the vacant land for several years. His nephew was on the property Friday morning hunting when the car was discovered.

Yemassee Police did not receive any reports of a fire in the last 24 hours and are reviewing surveillance cameras in the area to see who may have went down that road.

The case has been passed to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division where they will work to identify the body. The Yemassee Police Department is also working on their end, going through missing persons reports to help narrow down that search.
