Loved ones holding memorial ride for cyclist killed on Cross Island Parkway

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - It's been one week since a Hilton Head man was hit and killed by a drunk driver while cycling on the Cross Island Parkway, and Thursday night, his friends and neighbors are coming together to remember him.

Friends say seeing Jeff Garske on his bicycle is how they'll remember him. Those who knew him recall his dedication to his patients. He worked as a doctor for many years, and was even in Boston when the annual marathon was attacked. But the one thing everyone could agree on is that Jeff loved being outdoors and he loved his bike, so they'll all gather at the entrance on Honey Horn to take a final ride in his memory Thursday night. They will travel along the Cross Island Parkway, passing by his memorial and ending at Long Cove Club.

"Once again, as a whole, he touched, I think, everybody's life in this community. If he wasn't taking care of them as a doctor, he was watching the Green Bay Packers at one of the local pubs or establishments. I don't know how many of these folks who took care of their injuries on his couch. He was just a friend to everybody," said Douglas Tice, friend.

The driver of the car that hit Garske, Richard Alford, is behind bars for a felony DUI. His bond was set at $50,000. He'll be required to have electric monitoring upon his release. We'll keep you updated on his next appearance in court.
