Joy Prom held in Savannah
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Saturday night was a special night under the sea for more than 100 people dancing the night away at the Joy Prom.
It's a night of mentoring and dancing all under one roof.
"We're teaching our young men how to serve the community by caring for those less fortunate," said Jay Thompson, Xcel Strategies.
Jay Thompson mentors guys ages 15-25, most without parents, and Saturday night they were the dates of some special needs people in the community. Like Danette Horton whose been coming for about 10 years.
"I enjoy meeting new friends, dancing, partying, having fun," said Horton.
Other volunteers also joined in on the fun as dates for men coming to the prom like Michael.
"I love to dance, have fun, enjoy yourself," said Michael.
"This is my first time, so I"m super excited," said Lily Stokes, Volunteer.
"I know Michael is going to dance the night away because I've known Michael for many years and this is one of his favorite nights of the year," said Candy, Volunteer.
All the participants had to do was show up in their Sunday best. When they arrived they received flowers, make up, jewelry, pictures and goodies.
The Joy Prom has been going on for several years in Savannah and it's all about caring for the community.
But they also get something in return.
"We've got a lot of people who come to serve but when they leave they actually find a blessing that they receive and that's why we call it the Joy Prom," said Thompson.
Everyone truly enjoyed themselves and cut a rug on the dance floor.
"I love to dance," said Horton.
If you would like to be a apart of this special night in the future or even want to volunteer you can find more information on their website here.
