SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Summer break is over for Otis Brock Elementary School students.

Those students will be the first ones in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System to head back to class. They'll return bright and early Monday morning, but first, the school will have its open house on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

"Because we start on July 17, we will be hosting open house on Sunday; a first for Savannah and just a little different style just to get our students excited about coming back early," said Selina Ruth-Gillans, Principal, Otis Brock Elementary.

It will be carnival-style with lots of fun for the kids, and they'll also give away school supplies and have information about safe routes to school as well as registrations and schedules. Principal Ruth-Gillans says they're trying to make sure it's fun as well as educational for the students so they'll be geared up for their new school year with an extended calendar - a step to get Brock off the failing schools list.

"I'm excited because, with extended learning, it has limited the amount of time the students are out of school, so we're preventing that summer learning loss that typically happens, and hopefully they'll be geared and ready to start over again," the principal said.

The open house will also be the time to meet the teachers.
