SOUTH CAROLINA (WTOC) - It's easy to forget to check for underground utility lines before starting a construction or home improvement project.

Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority paired up with the staff at 811 to send residents a pretty big reminder in the form of a massive hot-air balloon. The balloon is emblazoned with a reminder to call 811 before digging into the ground.

Visitors were able to take a short ride on the balloon as it hovered 10 feet off the ground, while staff instructed them on the dangers of cutting any utility lines underground. When lines are cut, it can cause injuries, repairs, fines, and outages. Officials say that every project that involves digging warrants a call to 811.

"There are lots of utilities in the ground. We don't want anybody to get hurt, and also we want to protect the utilities. It's very costly to have to repair them or replace them, so that's the main thing," said community liaison, South Carolina 811.

811 has worked to prevent more than 54 percent of utility line-caused accidents since their beginning.
