SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The candidates running for the Savannah-Chatham County School Board will face off against each other on Tuesday, April 17.
Georgia Southern University is hosting a forum where the candidates will answer questions prepared by Georgia Southern's College of Education and other faculty members.
The General election is set for May 22, and Districts five, six, and eight are all up for grabs. If you plan to vote, Georgia Southern says this would be a good time to learn about the candidates and what they stand for when it comes to participating in the school board.
There are four district seats up for grabs, and two candidates running for each seat except for one, the District 4 seat. All seven candidates are expected to be at Tuesday's forum, which will mark the first time they will all be under the same roof for a public forum.
The candidates seeking election to the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System Board include the following:
- District 4, Shawn Anton Kachmar
- District 5, Irene Gadson Hines and Theresa L. Watson
- District 6, Alfreda Jeanette Goldwire and David Andrew Bringman
- District 8, Ruby D. Jones and Tonia Denise Howard-Hall.
WTOC asked one of the professors involved in Tuesday's forum about some of the questions they expect to hear.
"The questions won't be all sugar coated. We have 11 failing schools in this district. We have half a billion annual budget for the school district, so there's some big and important issues that need to be asked and dealt with, and this is a forum where those things will happen," said Ned Rinalducci, Associate Professor, GSU.
Tuesday's forum will only include the candidates running for the district seats. The five candidates running for school board president will have their own forum next Thursday, April 26. The SCCPSS board president candidates include: Joseph Alexander Buck, Lawrence L. Lower, Betty G. Morgan, David Kingdon Lerch and Tyesha Rochelle Whitely.
Both forums will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Armstrong Center on the Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus (13040 Abercorn Street).
