SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A bystander is dead after a shooting between a Savannah Police officer and another man.

While Savannah Police officers were investigating a shooting on New Castle Street, they encountered a 20-year-old man, identified as Chantz Cooper, in the 1600 block of Stratford Street who matched the description of a person possibly involved in the shooting.

Cooper and an officer then started shooting. One of the bullets veered into a nearby home and hit a woman inside. That woman has since been identified as Cooper's grandmother, Cynthia Fields. She died at the scene.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the case and doesn't know who shot Fields. The GBI will send her body to the crime lab in Savannah for an autopsy.

Cooper was injured in the shootout and treated at the hospital for minor injuries before being booked in the Chatham County Detention Center yesterday on charges of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon or felony first offender and criminal attempt to commit a felony.

No officers were hurt in the shooting.

The GBI will independently investigate what happened during the shooting and turn the case over to the Chatham County District Attorney's Office when the investigation is complete.
