Area doctors educating football coaches on injury prevention

Local doctors educating coaches on preventing injuries

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - With football season kicking off in the Savannah area next week, that means the injuries are unfortunately also around the corner.

That's why Chatham Orthopaedic Associates will host their first ever free coaches seminar this Saturday at Calvary Day School.

Several doctors, physical therapists, and athletic trainers will be on hand to provide coaches with information on how to best prevent injuries and heat illnesses, and what to do when their players do get hurt.

While they'll hit on the common injuries seen in football, they'll also be tackling one of the sport's most discussed subjects.

"The other thing that we're doing that has gotten a lot of attention recently, is to talk about concussions and management, especially in football," says Chatham Orthopaedic Associates surgeon Dr. Dow Hoffman. "We want to sort of bring everybody up to date on how we treat those, and how we take getting your bell rung a little bit more seriously than perhaps has been done in the past."

The seminar begins at 8:30 Saturday morning and runs until noon. Former NBA player and coach Cazzie Russell will be the seminar's guest speaker. To reserve a spot, call (912) 355-1508.
