SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Time is running out for high school students to apply for the Savannah Sports Council's first ever Scholar-Athlete Scholarship.

The deadline to apply is Friday, Aug. 31, at 5:00 p.m.

The scholarship is only for high school senior athletes attending public, private or a home school in Chatham County.

"This is something new that we wanted to add to show student athletes that we appreciate what they've done and as a sports council, we want to honor those athletes," Savannah Sports Council Director Rob Wells said.

Students must submit an application, short essay, and two letters of recommendation.

The Savannah Sports Council will meet with other groups to determine both a male and female winner and will award each winner with a $1000 scholarship at the Georgia Power Sports Award Banquet on Wednesday, September 26, at 12:00 p.m. The winners must be present for the luncheon.
