SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Savannah Bananas wound up just shy of the Coastal Plain League finals while setting records on the field and off, so they are hoping to keep some continuity to the franchise.
Head Coach Tyler Gillum will be back for the 2019 season. In his first year in Savannah, Gillum led the Bananas to a 37-13 record and their third appearance in the C.P.L. Playoffs. It's more than numbers bringing Gillum back, though.
Team President Jared Orton said Gillum fit in well with the Bananas' philosophy.
"We've got to find guys that fit and know what it's like to play for the Savannah Bananas, we're not just looking for guys to pad their stats and go home, we're looking for guys that come in and commit to being a part of this Bananas culture, and that's what he started sharing with people and it's amazing. We saw some videos after the season where guys were saying, 'best summer I ever had, never knew that this is what summer baseball was going to be like."
"The culture of the Bananas organization is really unique and focused on positively impacting people which makes this an easy decision to come back again," Gillum said.
