3 charged in 2014 double homicide in Hazlehurst

HAZLEHURST, GA (WTOC) - Three arrests have been made in the shooting deaths of two people in Hazlehurst - a man and his mother.

Police believe the son, Javonnie Chambers, was the primary target of the shooting. May of this year will mark five years since Chambers and his mother, Mary Chambers, were killed. The Hazlehurst Police Department says last week, three men were charged in connection to the shooting.

Hazlehurst Police Chief Ken Williams says this case has been a long investigation - one that started before he took the position of police chief.

“We don’t want to shortchange anybody. We want to do everything we can to make sure we have a solid case, and that’s what’s been going on in this case,” Chief Williams said. “Nobody has put it on the back-burner and tried to ignore it or set it aside.”

Williams says three men have been charged with one count of felony murder. Two of them - Gerald Jermaine Wright and Robert Benjamin Brown - are serving sentences in other states. They are on hold to be extradited back to Georgia for prosecution. The other man, Brandon Dante Hardaman, was taken into custody in Florida and is waiting to be transported back to Jeff Davis County.

“The three arrests will be a big deal for the family. Maybe it will give them some closure,” the chief said. “I know they won’t get closure until we go to court and get a conviction. At least it lets them know law enforcement is doing their best to try to solve the case after five years.”

Chief Williams says the investigation would not have gotten this far without the hard work of local and state law enforcement. He’s asking if anyone has any additional information in this case to please call police.

“Investigators have been working tirelessly and long hours too. GBI has assisted in every way possible, and our investigator, our city investigator, has been teamed up with the GBI.”

The police chief says there are more charges expected in the case.
