SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Local artists will soon be showcasing their work in a Savannah neighborhood, but not in a traditional studio setting.

Eleven, weather-protected paintings will soon be installed along construction fencing in Savannah’s Starland District.

The idea for Fence Art Project was in part born from the successful Starland Mural Project, which added creative, colorful life to the sides of buildings in the district. Investment for the Fence Art Project is provided by the City of Savannah’s Weave-a-Dream program, and the artwork is set to adorn construction fencing at two different project sites along the Bull Street corridor: The Matadora and Starland Village.

“What we wanted to do is kind of take the momentum of working with the artists, bringing some color to the neighborhoods, and try to do that in a new and different way that would work for the current situation in our city and in the country. Something that could be safe, something that could be visible and something that could bring some color to some of the neighborhoods and areas around here,” said Clinton Edminster, Director of Fence Art Project.

Edminster says once the fences come down and the projects are finished, the artwork will be divided up among the three major sponsors of the project.

The Fence Art Project is designed as an entirely COVID safe program. Artists will produce their work separately and safely in their individual studio spaces. A series of receptions for the artwork will be announced in early January.

The Fence Art Project is the second endeavor of the Starlandia Foundation. In 2019 the Starlandia Foundation successfully produced The Starland Mural Project, hiring local artists to produce the largest community funded mural project in recent Savannah history.
