SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the food shrimp season has been extended to January 17th.

The decision was based on data and environmental conditions and will provide fishers with more opportunities.

The extension applies to Georgia’s territorial waters and allows for continued harvest of food shrimp.

The food shrimp fishery in state waters will close at 6:20 p.m. on January 17th. The earliest it can re-open under state law will be May 15.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says that the fishery generally re-opens around mid-June based on environmental factors and shrimp population data.
