LIST: Warming centers open up ahead of potential winter weather

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Some cities and counties in our area are beginning to announce warming centers ahead of potential winter weather.

Bryan County

As a precaution, Bryan County officials said they will open warming stations on Tuesday in North and South Bryan County.

They said these warming stations will give residents a safe and warm place to go to during the cold. According to Bryan County officials, the setups will be minimalistic with no cots, showers or other amenities.

  • South Bryan County Warming Station: Timber Trail Gymnasium, 508 Timber Trail
  • North Bryan County Warming Station: Pembroke Christian Church Social Hall, 116 West Bacon Street

Bryan County officials said residents are strongly encouraged to shelter in lace and avoid driving if possible.

Monday, county officials said Bryan County Public Works crews are working to sand bridges and prepare roads for hazardous conditions.

Beaufort County

In a press release, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said that cold weather shelters are set to open due to forecasted cold temperatures.

Two shelters are set to open for those in need.

The Sea Island Presbyterian Church (81 Lady’s Island Drive, Beaufort) will open Jan. 19 through Jan. 22 at 5 p.m. and will close at 8 a.m. the following mornings. Dinner, breakfast, and showers will be available at this location.

Service animals will be allowed at this location but the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said weapons, alcohol, smoking, and pets will not be permitted.

Christ Lutheran Church (829 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island) will open Jan. 20 through Jan. 22 at 5:30 p.m. and will close at 7:30 a.m. the following mornings.

Dinner and morning to-go meals will be provided at this location. Service animals will be allowed at the church but the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says no weapons, alcohol, smoking, or pets will be permitted.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office also reminds residents to protect the four P’s: people, pets, pipes, and plants.

Bulloch County

According to Bulloch County Public Safety and EMA, Pittman Park UMC has agreed to open their doors to anyone who needs a shelter or warm place to sleep as temperatures drop.

The shelter is set to open 5 p.m. Monday and will stay open until 10 p.m.

All guest must be inside before the doors lock at 10 p.m.

Pittman Park UMC said they will decide daily if there is a need to remain open and hours of operation.

City of Savannah

The city of Savanah and partner agencies are making warming facilities available for those who need shelter as temperatures drop over the weekend and into the week.

The city of Savannah says the Tompkins Regional Center, 2333 Ogeechee Road, will open Sunday and Monday at 7 p.m., it will close 7 a.m. the following morning for those in need of overnight shelter.

Tuesday, the Tompkins warming center will be open from 3 p.m. until 11 a.m. Thursday.

Pets are welcome at this facility but must remain under the owner’s control. The Tompkins center will provide bare essentials for those using the facility and says that needed supplies for pets should be brought to the facility. Capacity will be limited.

The city of Savannah said the Savannah Police Department and Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless can help those who need transportation to get to shelter locations.

As temperatures drop, Homeless Service Provider Partners say they plan to extend hours and services to those in need.

CSAH outreach staff will have transportation available to shelters from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday and Monday.

Effingham County

Tuesday, the Effingham County Emergency Management Agency announced that a warming shelter will open Tuesday at noon until 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 7 p.m.The Guyton Methodist Church in Effingham County shelter will be available for anyone seeking shelter from extremely cold temperatures. If you plan on going to the shelter, Effingham County EMA says you must bring all needed supplies such as bedding, food, water, medicine, and toiletries.

Jasper County

With cold weather approaching, an emergency warming shelter will open at Kingdom Touch Ministries at 6 p.m. on Tuesday to assist those in need.

The shelter requires community support to operate throughout this potential impact period. Donations and volunteers are greatly needed.

Items needed include: Drinks (water, coffee, juice) Non-perishable food items & snacks, Hygiene and First Aid products, Blankets & Sleeping Bags

Donation Drop-off Location: 6750 Tillman Rd.

The Agape Life Center at 5855 S. Okatie Highway will open Tuesday evening as a warming shelter serving Southern Jasper County. The center will open 9 p.m. Tuesday night and will stay open until Thursday morning at 7 a.m.

Additionally, the Jasper County Council and Emergency Services encourage residents to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly and those who may need extra assistance, during this severe weather event.

Long County

The Long County Sheriff’s Office announced that the Long County Jail will be open for residents as a warming station.The sheriff’s office said only Long County residents are allowed to utilize the jail due to limited space.Residents will need to provide a valid ID or another proof of residency to enter.
