Around 10,300 gallons of stormwater, sewage enter marsh area following sewer overflow, says Tybee Island officials
TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - In a social media post, Tybee Island officials shared that significant rainfall Saturday led to a sanitary sewer overflow.
Saturday afternoon, Tybee officials said they got around four to five inches of precipitation in a short period of time.
According to Tybee Island officials, “intense weather overwhelmed the South Island collection system, resulting in a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) from an elevated manhole near 807 Jones Avenue.”
City officials estimated that around 10,300 gallons of combined stormwater and sewage entered a nearby marsh area.
The City’s Water and Sewer Department immediately started work to mitigate the impacts and stabilize the system. The city says they have initiated sampling protocols in accordance to regulatory requirements.
“We remain committed to protecting public health and our natural environment. If you have any questions or require further information, please email feedback@cityoftybee.gov,” wrote the City of Tybee Island in a social media post.
