Holiday basketball tournaments bring showcase action to Savannah

Two showcase events feature high school teams across six gyms

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Two showcase-style high school basketball tournaments took place Friday across six different gyms in Savannah.

The second annual Savannah Christian Classic (Dec. 18-20) was held at Savannah Christian, while the 9th annual SCCPSS Holiday Classic (Dec. 19-20) took place at Savannah High, Groves, Beach, Woodville-Thompkins, and Jenkins.

St. Andrew’s defeats Mount Paran Christian 67-59

At the Savannah Christian Classic, the St. Andrew’s Lions faced Mount Paran Christian. The teams were tied at 20 with the first quarter winding down, but the Eagles scored the last points before the buzzer to take a 3-point lead into the second quarter.

St. Andrew’s responded early in the second quarter when Amari Cook passed to Milos Copic, who made the layup to cut the deficit to one point.

With the score tied at 25, Page Getter found Copic for a 3-pointer that gave St. Andrew’s a 3-point lead.

The Lions extended their advantage when Ja’cari Glover saved a turnover and scored to make it 34-28. St. Andrew’s continued applying pressure on defense, forcing a Mount Paran turnover that Chase Brown recovered. Brown found Copic, who passed to Cook and got it back for a score. The 6-foot-6 Serbian finished with a team-high 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Glover also scored 18 points and had 6 rebounds.

St. Andrew’s led by 8 points at halftime and held on to win 67-59.

Bradwell Institute girls defeat Jenkins 53-26

In the SCCPSS Holiday Classic, the Jenkins girls faced Bradwell Institute in a matchup between the fifth-ranked team in 3A and ninth-ranked team in 5A.

Bradwell’s Kennedy Bell scored the first points from the floor. The Tigers got off to a fast start as Bell picked up an and-1 basket that gave Bradwell a 12-6 lead.

Bradwell continued its dominance on both ends of the court. After a steal, Destini McLemore scored an easy basket.

Jenkins found a groove late in the first half when A’Niyah Browner found Ke’Ara Jones for a 3-pointer. On their next possession, the roles reversed as Jones found Browner, who made the shot to cut the deficit to 19-16.

The Tigers responded with 6 unanswered points before halftime and went on to win 53-26. Bradwell improved to 10-0, while Jenkins dropped to 6-2.
