What to expect at the polls as Georgia early voting ends Friday
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Georgia’s primary elections are less than a week away, with a record number of voters already casting ballots.
As of Wednesday night, over 671,000 in-person early ballots have been cast across the state, breaking records. Chatham County is ranked eighth in the state for early voter turnout, with over 15,000 ballots cast.
Early voting continues through Friday, with the Primary held May 19th.
“It takes like almost no time there was no one in line,” said Ashton Greene, an early voter.
Voters can use the My Voter Page to find polling locations and view a sample ballot to prepare. Greene said she used the voter information site to get her sample ballot and did her research before voting.
“I went to the voter information site and I got my sample ballot and I did my research and I just took my paper cheat sheet in there,” Greene said.
How long does it take to vote?
A WTOC’s Julianne Sheehan tested the process at the Savannah Civic Center. From the media line 150 feet from the front door, through the walk to the building, the elevator ride to the second floor, casting a ballot and returning the same way, the entire process took eight minutes and 52 seconds.
There are 57 candidates and two questions on the Democratic ballot and 69 candidates and eight questions on the Republican ballot. Voters say seeing so many names can be intimidating and researching candidates ahead of time is essential.
“I was like oh my gosh this is a lot of people because you don’t wanna put the wrong person in our office and it’s like oh my gosh I picked the wrong person,” said Kyra Bradshaw, an early voter.
Bradshaw said it felt good to know her voice is heard.
“I finally turned 18 and I was like this is like moving you know cause your vote is your voice. I definitely believe that,” Bradshaw said.
