Roofing companies at odds over name in Statesboro

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Two Statesboro roofing companies, both with basically the same name, are operating in the same city.

One's been there for more than a decade, the other arrived on the scene a few weeks ago.

One has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. The other does not and the confusion is causing some issues in Statesboro.

"They are being confused for us on a daily basis," said Trent Nesmith, owner of American Roofing and Vinyl Siding.

Nesmith's American Roofing has been based in Statesboro for the past 14 years, with operations in Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri and North Carolina.

"Google 'American Roofing' and we have worked really hard to organically build the search to find us, but that benefits him," Nesmith said.

Nesmith is referring to Richard Roberts, the owner of American Roofing and Vinyl, which just moved into Statesboro.

Nesmith says his American Roofing is getting calls about the new American Roofing, so he posted a warning online, which pops up when you visit their website, http://www.americanroofingandvinyl.com/.

"In an effort to try and prevent confusion, between the real and the imposters, I want to get it out to as many people as I can. We've worked really hard to build our name since 1999," Nesmith said.

WTOC contacted the new American Roofing group, who weren't happy about the tactics Nesmith was using. They told us they could use the name if they wanted to and they had a lawyer to deal with the competition.

The Better Business Bureau reported to WTOC that Nesmith's American Roofing has an A+ rating with the BBB.

The newcomers are not accredited with the BBB, but officials with the Better Business Bureau also found two BBB reviews that list Richard Coyle as the principal owner for American Roofing and Vinyl Siding in other states, not Richard Roberts, as his business cards show for American Roofing and Vinyl.

"He uses his alias, Richard Coyle, online which is his girlfriend's last name," Nesmith said.

Roberts and Shannon Coyle are both named on the new American Roofing's business card with a 912 area code number.

The Better Business Bureau questions why Richard Roberts did not use his legal last name in other states where he operated and Nesmith has other concerns, including the future of his company's reputation.

"I just want the gentleman to either change the name or leave Statesboro," Nesmith said. "If it has the name American Roofing, American Siding, anything like that, please reach out to us."

According to the BBB, the American Roofing and Vinyl which just came to Statesboro two weeks ago had one complaint in the last year, out of Kentucky, which was resolved. They've also operated under various other names in other states.
