SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Forsyth Park band shell fountain is undergoing a makeover that started Monday to make the feature more interactive and kid-friendly.

"My favorite thing to do is play in the playground," said Stu Kelly, a 3-year-old park fanatic. However, that view may change when this project is complete.

The project will demolish the existing fountain to make way for an expanded spray pool area for park-goers to enjoy, adding new spray nozzles and plumbing.

"It will be a splashy play area for the kids," said Saja Aures, with the city of Savannah. " It will be similar to our Ellis Square spray pool."

For years the fountain area was suppose to be off limits but many people did not follow that rule.

"What we found was that even though the fountain was off limits, people were still tempted to get into it and it just was not designed for that," said Aures.

"I think it is great, it will be great opportunity to play, and get wet, and cool off in the summer months," said Izzy Kelly, a mother of three. "It is nice to see the city put money toward such an important part of the city where people can gather."

The project is expected to be completed in four to six weeks. The project will cost about $42,000.
