SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - We all want to protect our children.

At WTOC, we want to protect your children too, but be careful about believing EVERYTHING you see on Facebook and social media.

Sometimes there are internet hoaxes which come back around again, over and over, almost cyclical. There is one a lot of parents are getting for an app that's for their children, and it's called the Talking Angela Hoax.

Last year around this time, a Facebook warning just like this one hit social media claiming the kitty kat kiddy app for youngsters “Talking Angela” was really a front for pedophiles, a disgustingly sneaky way for perverts to spy on kids.

It turns out the scare was based on a hoax, and an old one too.

I even warned people on my Facebook page last year, and then WTOC viewer Mary Davidson shared the same warning just the other day on my WTOC Don Logana Facebook page wall, and another viewer sent a message and another and another.

It's all hysteria. Security advisors warned me last year Angela is nothing more than a cartoon cat who hangs out in a Parisian cafe. Angela repeats what the user says and interacts when the user taps or swipes across the screen.

Now what makes the hoax believable and scary is that the app feature allowing Angela to text-chat with users is only activated when the child mode is turned off.

The message that spread on Facebook begins with, "I can't even in words say what I just found out."

But the bottom line is the app is NOT dangerous to children and is NOT a front for pedophiles, according to several reliable technology websites and Snopes.
