BRYAN CO., GA (WTOC) - According to officials from the Pembroke Police Department and Bryan County Sheriff's Office, a threat that surfaced last week on social media has been resolved.

A social media post claimed that a student would bring a gun to Bryan County High School on Friday of last week. School officials were aware of the threat and addressed the issue on Friday, and the individual or individuals responsible were expelled. Security was enhanced all day on Friday as a precaution.

Bryan County deputies and Pembroke officers reiterate that there is no threat against the school on Monday, but they will have an enhanced presence at the school again to alleviate any concerns.

Parents came to retrieve their children from school and others did not bring them at all on Monday after hearing of the threats made towards students.

Bryan County Board of Education has released the following statement concerning the matter:

"Mid-morning on Friday, August 28th , it was brought to the attention of school officials at Bryan County High School that a student had posted on a social media site a threat to bring a weapon to school and harm other students.  Immediately after receiving this information, school officials and law enforcement began an investigation.  As a result of the investigation, both school system and legal charges have been filed against the student who posted the threatening statement online. At no time was a weapon of any type found at Bryan County High School, and based on the evidence collected it was determined there was no credible threat to the safety of our students.  This was an isolated incident that was dealt with immediately.  Bryan County Schools is committed to ensuring that all of our students are provided a safe and orderly environment while at school, and we value our great partnerships with students, parents, and law enforcement in helping us keep our schools safe.

It is unfortunate that social media outlets provide a platform for students, and even adults, to say and do things they generally would not do face-to-face.  Bryan County High School is filled with wonderful students, faculty and staff, which makes it extraordinarily sad when the bad behaviors and poor decisions of one on social media disrupts the learning environment for every other student who is trying to receive a quality education.

As we partner together to do what is best for kids, I am asking parents to please monitor the social media activity of student(s), and contact school officials immediately if they have a concern.  It is imperative that as parents, students and community that we work together to ensure that our students receive a quality education in a safe and orderly environment." - Superintendent Paul Brooksher
