South Carolina Shrimpers Association looking at tariff benefits
S.C. (WTOC) - The South Carolina Shrimpers Association recently applauded the president’s decision to implement reciprocal tariffs on imported seafood.
“While recognizing the potential for short-term price adjustments for consumers across the Palmetto State and the impact it can have on families, we firmly believe this action is vital to protecting our local shrimping industry and ensuring the long-term health of our coastal communities,” wrote the association in a press release.
They say their support on this decision comes as South Carolina’s shrimpers face economic challenges due to the influx of imported shrimp.
They wrote, “Currently, the United States imports roughly 94% of its seafood, creating a market where our hard-working local fishermen struggle to survive.”
The South Carolina Shrimpers Association said the implementation of reciprocal tariffs, along with current practices, will help level the playing field.
“The South Carolina Shrimpers Association is committed to working with policymakers and consumers to ensure a sustainable and healthy seafood industry for our state. We believe that by supporting South Carolina’s shrimpers, we are not only protecting our local economy but also safeguarding the health of our families and communities,” concluded the South Carolina Shrimpers Association.
