Former Savannah Mayor Susan Weiner died late Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.
Weiner underwent arterial surgery on Aug. 3. Complications arose on Aug. 7, which resulted in seizures, a stroke and subsequent coma, from which she never awoke.
A Republican from Albany New York, who moved to Savannah in the mid-1980s, Weiner was the first woman to become mayor of Savannah when she defeated longtime Mayor John Rousakis in 1991.
She served one term and was defeated by Democrat, Floyd Adams. Weiner later served as executive director of the Coverdell Leadership Institute and the Georgia Council for the Arts in Atlanta.
